From Library Journal

Pulitzer Prize- and Academy Award-winning playwright Foote (Trip to Bountiful, Tender Mercies) chronicled his Wharton, TX, childhood in Farewell, in which he amusingly describes small-town life in the Twenties. Now he continues his story where he left off, leaving Wharton at 17 to study to become an actor. He travels to theater school in Pasadena but eventually makes it to New York by way of Martha's Vineyard, where he soon discovers his talent for writing and hobnobs with the likes of Martha Graham, Tennessee Williams, and Agnes de Mille. The result is a vivid portrait of the American theater community. Foote uses a great deal of dialog, which is disconcerting in an autobiography, as one wonders how he remembers these conversations so well. But he is, after all, a playwright, and this device works well with his rather spare style. Recommended, especially for collections that already have Farewell. Rosellen Brewer, Monterey Cty.
